REFORM THE GOVERNMENT NATIONAL PRACTITIONER DATA BANK

PETITION

A Call To Action

We the undersigned request action by the Secretary of Health and Human Services and Congress to enforce new clear and cogent Rules to Stop the abuse and restore credibility to the NPDB.

The NPDB keeps names of doctors, nurses and all care providers who were allegedly involved in malpractice and harmed patients. It began with good intentions, in 1986, as a tool that prevents truly bad, harmful practitioners from moving state-to-state. Its mission was to improve quality by reducing harm, protect the public, and reduce health care fraud and abuse in the U.S.

Sadly, good doctors and nurses get reported by administrators for things not involving “health care services”. Providers have no recourse and no Due Process is offered by the NPDB to defend against a hospital or administrator that wrongfully reports. It takes years and thousands of dollars for good care providers to clear their good name.

A Pediatrician led a team to save the life of an infant whose suffered a cardiac and respiratory arrest. You can imagine the room was noisy so she raised her voice so the staff could hear her orders for medications to bring the infant back to life. She was later cited as “disruptive” and reported to the NPDB. The NPDB accepted the report at face value. Another hospital felt a physician’s application was not complete or accurate but never requested further information. The NPDB accepted a report on this physician who had an excellent record and was not delivering healthcare at this hospital. This absurdity from a government agency is harmful to physicians, nurses and patients. We urge you to rectify this situation.

Stop the abuse of the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB). The Petition is to assure reports only reflect doctors or nurses with truly bad performance while delivering care that harms patients.

Say STOP to blacklisting good physicians and nurses.

Say YES to your career and reputation.

DOCTORS…DON’T LOSE YOUR JOB! THAT GOES FOR NURSES TOO!!

Petition:

DOCTORS…DON’T LOSE YOUR JOB!

THAT GOES FOR NURSES TOO!!

Stop the misuse of the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB)
We the undersigned request action by the Secretary of Health and Human Services and Congress to enforce new clear and cogent Rules to Stop the abuse and restore credibility to the NPDB.

Stop NPDB from accepting non-reportable events, including practitioners not involved in providing “health care services”. Stop reporting physician applicants who never serve on a hospital staff but are denied membership for reasons other than harmful patient care or fraud.

Make sure reports pertain to the actual letter and intent of the Law, and limit reports to “harmful performance while providing healthcare”.
STOP the blacklisting of good physicians and nurses and demand Due Process be implemented by the NPDB to enable good practitioners to defend against baseless accusations with equal protections provided to any U.S. citizen.

We petition you to protect everything we’ve worked for—our careers and reputations.
